Gertrud Stöckel was born on October 6, 1867 in Posen/Poland to Jewish parents Ida Landsberg née Kastan and her husband. She moved to Berlin and married the Jewish master builder Moritz Moses Stöckel. The latter was born on January 31, 1862 in Czortkow/Tarnopol (then Austria, today Ukraine) as the son of the merchant Isaac Stöckel and his wife Fradel née Stöckel. His brother Siegmund was also a builder, his sisters were Sara and Dwora. Moritz and Siegmund successfully participated in the development of the Berlin suburb of Friedenau with their building businesses.
