While the oldest surviving gravestone in the Jewish cemetery in Wagenfeld dates back to 1811, the cemetery was probably laid out as early as the 18th century. In the course of the separation of the estates of the Auburg estate and the municipality of Wagenfeld between 1853 and 1870, the cemetery was extended to its current size. (Friedhoff 2008, p. 115) In 1937 Richard Heilbrunn and his father-in-law Berthold Frankenstein were the last remaining members of the congregation to donate the cemetery to the Landrabbinat Hannover. (Friedhoff 2008, p. 116/117) There is conflicting information about how the cemetery was treated during the Nazi era. While according to Lessing the cemetery was leveled in 1938 (Lessing 2005, p. 1527), according to Friedhoff it survived the Nazi regime unscathed. (Friedhoff 2008, p. 154) The Wagenfeld cemetery was closed in 1982, 1984 and 2001 and many of the gravestones were knocked over or demolished. (Diamant 2000, p. 57/58; Schändungen Niedersachsen 2021)
