In the middle of the 18th century there is the first report of a synagogue in the village. Since the so-called ,old synagogue‘ had been close to collapse in 1850 because of the length of its existence, the community planned the construction of a new synagogue Since the financial resources of the few Jewish families were not sufficient, the community asked by an appeal in the "Der treue Zionswächter" of 31. May 1850, for collections to finance the new building. If also without gewünschten tower, took place approx. 1856 then the building of a new synagogue in those to 1908 services were held until the congregation had become too small. The objects of worship were given to the Jewish community in Witzenhausen. In 1937 the Jewish community of Witzenhausen sold the former synagogue to the innkeeper W. Waldmann. The inn is still located in the building of the former Jewish school, which is next to the synagogue. Waldmann converted the synagogue building into a storage shed. The building has been listed as a historical monument for several years. Last known use of Gerd Kümpel as a storage shed.

Note on the synagogue: the Torah shrine had a clock.

Nordostansicht der ehemaligen Synagoge in Hebenshausen
View of the synagogue from the main street. You can see a stone building with half-timbered elements, which has a large helter-skelter gate facing the street. On the left side, in the direction of a garden, a small round window is incorporated into the wall.

Beschreibung
View of the entrance with Hebrew inscription above the door frame. The inscription means "Good is the night in the house of God" and is quite unusual as a portal slogan for synagogues. "Background for this inscription could be that the Jewish community in Hebenshausen was very orthodox; orthodox people spend especially the night of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement; highest holiday in Judaism) in the synagogue. Possibly the synagogue was consecrated before a Yom Kippur and the year, which results from the gematria and the reference to the night altogether result that the synagogue was consecrated in the year 5604 = 1843/44 on Yom Kippur (Yom Kippur was 5604 on October 4, 1843)."
