An der Burg 4
34414 Warburg
Germany
Warburg was the seat of the Oberlandesrabbinate of Westphalia since 1686 at the latest. A prayer room in a house at the Altstädter Markt was first mentioned around 1650. After the prince bishop of Paderborn had given his approval at the end of the 17th century, a synagogue was established in the somewhat remote, narrow and steep Altstadtgasse "An der Burg", the Jewish schoolhouse was attached to the building. On the evening of November 10, SA and SS members, supported by men from the "SS Division Germania" stationed in Arolsen, stormed the synagogue and destroyed the interior furnishings, the roof dome and parts of the surrounding walls. Objects of worship were desecrated and then dragged to the marketplace together with synagogue inventory and publicly burned.
In 1945, the synagogue was renovated and briefly used for services. Later it was converted first into a sweet cider factory, later into a residential building, this use still exists today.
By the city of Warburg a memorial plaque was installed, which reminds of the history of the house.
