At the end of the 18th century there was already a small Jewish community in Hülchrath, which apparently also operated a prayer room in Herzogstraße. The synagogue in Broichstraße was consecrated on May 1876. The synagogue in Broichstraße was consecrated on May 12, 1876. Before the forced sale of the synagogue in May 1938, almost all of the furniture was stolen by students of the so-called Reichsbauernschule in Hülchrather Schloss. Only a few Bänke übrig remained. On May 19, the building was forcibly sold to a local butcher. He severely altered the fabric of the building. At times the prayer room was used as a slaughter room and sausage kitchen. After the death of the butcher, the building passed to his daughter and son-in-law. In the post-war period, the Jewish Trust Corporation for Germany pursued restitution proceedings for the building. As a result, the owners had to make an additional payment.
In the 1980s, the building remained largely unused. The conversion plans of the owners were not realized. In 1991, the Aktionsbündnis Synagoge (synagogue action group) was founded, which initially aimed to set up a memorial room in the Hemmerden synagogue. When this could not be realized, the activists turned to the synagogue in Hülchrath. This was finally sold by the owners to the city. With funds from the city of Grevenbroich, the district of Neuss and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the synagogue was comprehensively renovated. On November 9, 1995, it was reopened as a memorial and meeting place. Since then, exhibitions and lectures have been held there regularly.
