Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in the house at Bahnhofstra e 20 in Ulm as the first-born child of his Jewish parents, Hermann Einstein and Pauline Einstein (née Koch).
In April 1929, Einstein wrote about his birthplace in a letter to Carlos Erlanger, the son of the owner of the house at the time: „For being born, the house is quite nice; for on this occasion one does not yet have such great aesthetic needs, but one first fills one's loved ones without worrying much about reasons and circumstances.
The house, built in 1871, was destroyed in December 1944 during one of the heaviest air raids on Ulm. Einstein had no special relationship with the house where he was born. When he was sent a picture of his destroyed birthplace in 1945, he wrote in a reply: „Time has been considerably worse to him than to me.“
