Arthur Lewin came from Schwetz an der Oder, his wife Elise Engel from Schönlanke in the Netzkreis district. It is documented that Arthur and Elise Lewin settled in Schivelbein in the Pomeranian hinterland in 1908 at the latest.Probably even earlier, because on February 11, 1909, they announced in the Schivelbeiner Kreiszeitung the „closing of the seasonal clearance sale“ the winter sale –. They had opened a shop for textiles and manufactured goods in a prime location on the market square and moved into the apartment above.
Arthur Lewin sold everything to do with fabric – clothing for women, men and children, table and bed linen, bedsprings. In addition, there were manufactured goods – known today as yard goods and haberdashery, i.e. fabrics, braids, knots and the like. The store was in an ideal location at a time when the Schivelbein market square was still surrounded by buildings. With St. Mary's Church in the background, there were not only regular customers, but also walk-in customers. And there was no parking problem here, as there was space for all kinds of carriages in front of the store.
Long before the National Socialists came to power, anti-Semitism had already become widespread in Schivelbein's economic life. In the 1920s, the Schivelbeiner Kreiszeitung decided to stop publishing advertisements by Jewish entrepreneurs. The Jewish textile businesses struggled to survive, while the only Christian business in the town was able to expand and open a second shop.In 1932, bankruptcy proceedings were opened over Arthur Lewin's assets, which were lifted again in July of that year, but in 1933 it was finally over: on November 13, the Arthur Lewin company in Schivelbein ceased to exist.
Arthur and Else Lewin were deported from Berlin to Theresienstadt on November 3, 1942 and to Auschwitz on October 9, 1944. The exact date of their death is unknown.
