In 1889, the merchants Ferdinand Elsbach and Julius Frank founded their specialist business, initially only for men's and boys' clothing, some of which they had produced in their own tailoring shop.
The company expanded in 1910: The managing director Josef Adamski founded a branch in Hildesheim, Hoher Weg 8. Adamski ütook over this branch in 1933, and it is now run under the name Adamski GmbH & Co. KG today.
In 1910–1911, the architect Rudolf Friedrich built the new Zum Stern department store for the parent store in Hanover, which was extended in 1931.
The building has been a listed building since 1992.
While one of the company's advertising slogans in 1913 was "What the youth, the man, the sportsman, the young man and the tourist needs is on offer", this was later expanded to include women's clothing.
After the death of Ferdinand Elsbach in 1931 the company apparently went bankrupt during the Great Depression and was taken over by the clothing store Otto Werner üafter a settlement in 1933.
