Walter Johann Guttsmann was born in Berlin on 8 May 1880.
From the winter semester of 1898/99 to the winter semester of 1902/03, Walter Guttsmann studied electrical engineering at the
technical university in Berlin. He graduated in 1904.
Since then he worked as an engineer in various positions at AEG
Walter served as a soldier during the First World War. After the war, Walter Guttsmann married Helene Guttsmann in Berlin in 1919
. Helene Guttsmann, née Kamerase, was born on 05.08.1887 in
Stehlen/Silesia (today Strzelin in Poland).
After the wedding, the couple's children were born. In 1920 Wilhelm Leo Guttsmann
was born and in 1923 Hannah Guttsmann.
After the First World War, Walter continued to work for AEG and in 1927 was granted procuration (a
representative power). On June 30, 1933, Walter was stripped of his power of attorney and
retired.
After many moves, the Guttsmann family moved to Schwalbenbergweg 27, where Walter
operated a company for technical consulting. During the Kristallnacht in November 1938, the Guttsmanns
almost completely destroyed the house.
As a result, the family moved back to Berlin until they were forced to move into so-called
Jewish apartments.
On March 28th, 1942, Walter and Helene Guttsmann were murdered.1942, Walter and Helene Guttsmann were deported together with 983 other people on
the 11th Osttransport from Berlin to the Piaski ghetto near Lublin.
The last traces of the Guttsmanns' lives were found in 1942. How and when they perished is
not exactly clear. If they had not already died beforehand from the conditions in the camp,
they were either killed in October/November 1942 or during the liquidation of the
ghetto in March/April 1943, when around a thousand victims were shot in Pialski.
