Else Dessau, née Wolff, was born in Celle on January 21, 1898. Her parents were Anna, née Cussel and Max Wolff, the father of the Jewish community. Else had three sisters and four brothers. The family moved to Hamburg in 1915. Else became a tailor and in 1929 she married the tailor John Dessau. The couple lived in Hamburg and their son Heinz was born on April 13, 1930. Shortly after the birth, John Dessau left his family. Else lost her job in 1933 because she was a Jew. With her father in need of care and her son Heinz, Else, who herself was in poor health, lived in modest circumstances due to National Socialist repression. Else's last forced residence in Hamburg was a "Jews' house", her son lived in a boys' orphanage.
On December 6, 1941, 964 Jews were deported from Hamburg to Riga-Jungferndorf, including Else and her son as well as her brothers Georg and Willi. None of them survived. Else's father, Max Wolff, was first deported to Theresienstadt and then to the Treblinka extermination camp, where he was murdered. John Dessau was murdered in Auschwitz. It is known that Else's sisters, Johanna and Paula, were able to emigrate to England.
