The Stein family
The Stein family consisted of the mother Elly Stein, who was born on June 19, 1890, and the father Leopold Stein, who was born on February 5, 1880. They had two daughters, Ruth and Lotte Stein.
Elly and Leopold got engaged in 1912, married and lived in Bleicherode. Leopold was a teacher at the local secondary school. In 1933 he was retired because he was Jewish („Arierparagraph“). In October 1933, the Stein family moved to Erfurt, where Leopold then worked as a merchant and on December 31, 1939, he was given permission to set up a private Jewish elementary school in a room at Viktoriastraße 16 (today Puschkinstraße). He lived and taught here until 1942 and was deported to Auschwitz on March 2, 1943. Lotte emigrated to Israel in 1935 and Ruth to England in 1939.
