With the consecration of the new synagogue and the opening of the modern community center, a new stage of development began in the history of the community, which played and continues to play a decisive role in the lengthy integration process of the many new members from the countries of the former Soviet Union.
The New Synagogue Dresden and the community center on the Hasenberg site were planned and built primarily as an open house. The Jewish community in Dresden felt committed to this concept over a long period of time. Countless public events were held here. Hundreds of thousands of visitors, including countless school classes and youth groups, came to get to know the Jewish place of worship It was not until the events surrounding the attack by the right-wing extremist assassin on the synagogue in Halle in October 2019 on Yom Kippur that the community was forced to rethink the relationship between the need for openness and the need for security. Following the necessary renovations, the Dresden Jewish community will endeavor to breathe new life into its concept of an open house for Dresden's urban society and beyond.
The Jewish community celebrated Shabbat and the High Holidays in the Fiedlerstrasse synagogue from 1950 to 2001. Surrounded by the grounds of the New Jewish Cemetery in Dresden, it was separated by a hedge, but from a halachic point of view it always remained a temporary solution for many Jews with traditional religious beliefs. Since 2001, the building has once again been used exclusively as a mourning hall.
