Mourning hall and cemetery of the Jewish community of Schwerin

The cemetery from 1717 on the Schwälkenberg in the north of Schwerin's old town, in the Werdervorstadt on the street 'Am Heidensee, has been cut through by Bornhövedstraße since the early 1950s. At that time, only a third of the southern part with its funeral hall was occupied.

With the arrival of Jewish emigrants from the countries of the former USSR in the early 1990s, the Jewish community of Schwerin hoped to be able to use the historic cemetery 'Am Heidensee' (northern part of the divided cemetery) again. However, due to a legal dispute - a private individual filed a lawsuit against the usage permit - the municipality temporarily provided the young community with a new burial area in a municipal cemetery (Waldfriedhof). The legal dispute, which lasted more than two decades, has now been settled; the site can now be used as a burial ground again.
