ul. Józefa 42
31-056 Kraków
Poland
The building of the Jewish Orthodox ‘Kowea Itim Le Torah Brotherhood’ at ul. Józefa 42 was built as a place for Torah study. The Torah school was built in 1810 on the site of a house from 1773, and in 1815 it was able to add a prayer room called ‘Orthodox House of Prayer by R. Aharon Klaus’.
In 1912-1913, the building was renovated and rebuilt again according to the design of architect Łazarz Rock.
During World War 2, the German Nazi occupation forces destroyed the religiousöse institution. After the end of the war, the Krakow municipality used the building to house displaced persons. Today, the structure serves as a customary apartment building.
On the front of the building there is a unique Hebrew inscription ( ח"ק קובע עתים לתורה - HK sets times for the Torah) and two Stars of David. In one of them is the date of construction of the religiousösen institution, in the other the date of renovation. Another feature of the structure are semi-circular windowsöffungen and Türen.
