Mauristraße
41516 Grevenbroich
Germany
Already in 1787 there was a prayer hall in Mauristra;e. In 1859 the synagogue was consecrated here. In 1938 the interior of the synagogue was damaged and destroyed during the November pogrom. Since there was a gasoline depot near the building, the synagogue was not set on fire. Non-Jewish residents feared for the safety of their own homes. After the pogrom, the synagogue was taken out of the possession of the Jewish community and from 1939 was used as accommodation for Polish and Russian prisoners of war. After 1945, the building became private property and was used as a storage shed. In 1986, the building was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Grevenbroich. Two years later, the building was again sold to private individuals and rebuilt as part of a residential building. In the 1990s, an action alliance was formed around Hemmerden Shoah survivor Marianne Stern-Winter, who sought to establish a memorial in the former synagogue. After these efforts failed, the Bündnis turned to the synagogue in Hülchrath. In 1995, the information board was installed below the street sign Mauristraße.
