Adolf Abraham and his brother Julius worked towards the end of the 19th century in the Bonn branch of Leonhard Tietz's department store group, which was also Jewish. In 1901, the brothers left this branch and opened their own department store in rented premises at Hauptstraße 59 in Rheydt.
Shortly thereafter, the brothers expanded their business and moved into additional space at the former Krefelder Strasse 61 and 65 in Mönchengladbach. Because business flourished so strongly, a prestigious building was constructed in 1905/1906 by the well-known department store architect Otto Engler on what is now Hindenburgstrasse 125. This is the current location of a Galeria Kaufhof store. Galeria Kaufhof had emerged from the Leonhard Tietz department store group in the course of the Aryanization. The Abraham department store had been sold to this department store group in 1927. Leonhard Tietz AG was already Aryanized in 1934.
