Hindenburgstraße 3
41749 Viersen
Germany
In 1812, the Jewish community in Süchteln built its prayer room on the second floor at Hindenburgstraße 3. The private house was located directly next to the Protestant church.
During the November pogroms, the building was not set on fire because there was a barbershop on the first floor owned by non-Jewish owners. Nevertheless, the prayer room was completely destroyed.
The owner of the hairdresser's salon wanted to buy the building after the November pogroms, but this was rejected by the city, so that the land and the building were acquired by the city of Viersen on August 20, 1939.
In 1970, the building was demolished because of its poor structural condition and rebuilt. Since 1985, a memorial plaque here commemorates the former location of the Süchteln prayer room. Since 2018, Stolpersteine have also been laid here for those Jews from Süchteln whose last place of residence can no longer be determined.
