The Jewish businessman Samuel Schwarz (*26 March 1810) lived with his wife Elisabeth (née Bloch, *1818) since 1873 at the latest in Marienstraße 24 in Greiz and had with her eight children (Laura, Lina, Rosa, Hulda, Agnes, Emilie, Detmar, Max). In 1840 the former wool merchant settled in Greiz together with Ephraim Schulhof and was incorporated in the same year. In 1850 he was accepted into the religious community of Lomnička (Czech Republic). In 1851, Samuel's brother Joachim Schwarz also came to Greiz and the Schwarz family business was henceforth called "Joachim & Samuel Gebrüder Schwarz". Later, this developed into the banking house "J. & S. Schwarz" at Marienstra;e 24.
Samuel Schwarz laid the foundation stone for the company that his sons Max and Detmar Schwarz founded in 1876 („Samuel Schwarz Söhne, Mechanische Weberei“). He was a member of the municipal council of Greiz and after his retirement due to age in 1886 was appointed a city councilor by Heinrich XXII Fürst Reuß älterer Linie .
On March 26, 1889 Samuel Schwarz passed away, his wife Elisabeth died a few months later. Before his death, he arranged for the construction of the Villa Samuel Schwarz in the Zeulenrodaer Straße 8, right next to the company premises of his sons.
