After the family had to move out of their apartment at Hofgartenweg 7 on December 31, 1939, and was housed in a barrack, they moved into the house at Am Zieger 10, where the house owner Friedrich Lustinetz provided them with accommodation. On September 20, 1942, Leopold's mother Julie Popper (née Knöpfelmacher, *October 30, 1866 in Uherský Ostroh [Eng: Hungarian Ostra]) was deported with 876 other people on transport number XVI/1 from Weimar to Theresienstadt. She was assigned the identification number 636. She died on February 27, 1943. Leopold Popper was deported to the forced labor camp Ceverny in 1944, where he worked underground until August 1944. He was then taken to a labor camp in Wasseralfingen. There he was able to escape during a transport and made his way toward northern Germany. In Osnabrück, he surrendered to the Allies, received valid papers and was able to return to Greiz.
In Greiz, Leopold Popper became a trustee of the company "Gebrüder Berglas AG" and lived with his family at 76 Schönfelder Strasse in 1948/49. He died in 1970, Hildegard Popper passed away in 1981.
