Straße der Opfer des Faschismus 15 und 14a
38820 Halberstadt
Germany
With the consolidation of the neo-orthodox Jewish community in Halberstadt, it undertook various conversion and new building projects after 1850: After the Klaussynagoge (1857/58), the Gemeindesynagoge (1879), the Gemeindemikwe (1891/92), the third cemetery (1895/96) and the school (1899), on December 22, 1912, the Jewish retirement home „Newe Menucha“ (Hebrew for the elderly) was opened. December 1912 in the Wilhelmstraße 15 - on the initiative of the families Baer and Meyer - also the Jewish old people's home „Newe Menucha“ (Hebrew „source of rest“) was inaugurated.
The building had been erected in 1849 as an inn, from 1892 guest rooms were also rented out, and so here - after reconstruction of the house and garden - there was room for about 10-12 residents. The neighboring house, Wilhelmstraß 14a, was also acquired for the old people's home, but continued to be rented out as a sideline.
After 1933, both houses became important places to go: In the former old people's home at Wilhelmstraße 15, the municipality set up a „Hachschara“-center, which was primarily intended to prepare young people for emigration to Palestine in courses. In the house Wilhelmstraße 14a moved now increasingly Jüdische housing seekers.
Both buildings üude üsurvived the November pogrom 1938 unscathed, but were henceforth declared to so-called "Judenhäusern". They remained the property of the Jewish community - until the deportation of the last Jewish half-timers in 1942. About 50 people still lived on site in Wilhelmstraß.
After the community synagogue was altered and demolished in 1938/39, a small prayer room was set up in the attic of Wilhelmstraß 15 - as the only remaining meeting place for the community, which offered just enough space for a minyan (10 people). The nails of the mezuzah on the door post can still be seen today.
After 1945, both buildings in the renamed „Street of the Victims of Fascism“ continued to serve as residential buildings. While No. 14a has been renovated in the meantime, the listed building of the former old people's home (No. 15) is empty. Demolition is planned. A commemorative plaque is not available.
