The Jewish cemetery Biesenthal is located on the Berliner Chaussee, just before leaving the town in the direction of Bernau on the left hand side on a small wooded hill next to the main entrance to the municipal cemetery. It is fenced in.
Directly behind the gate, the memorial stone, donated in 1988, is set into a landscaped stone fortification, where a small step leads to the burial ground.
In a roundel under two oaks stands the only surviving gravestone; next to it in a semicircle lie the fragments, some badly damaged, of eight other gravestones.
Note in "Stein und Name" by Brocke, Ruthenberg and Schulenburg, p. 258:
"The designation of the cemetery as 'former' is understandable in view of its condition, but it overlooks the fact that it is an existing and therefore 'functioning' Good Place ..."
"German text on the obverse, where it is noticeable that, in contrast to the month information, the year of birth and death are given according to the Jewish calendar, and the civil year numbers are added in brackets: Jacob Fliess, b. 3 January 5567 (1807); d. 18 April 5629 (1869)."
The tombstone reads:
"If you have known the Theuern in pious humility of heart, How he with restless mind carefully and lovingly worked, O' then you sense the pain, the deep piercing sorrow, which envelops our soul." [Stone and Name, p. 260]
