Hermann Horwitz was born on 27.12.1885 in Weißenburgerstr. 64 (Prenzlauer Berg, today Kollwitzstr. 57) as one of six children of the married couple Adelheide and Isidor Horwitz. After graduating from the Sophien-Realgymnasium in Weinmeisterstraße in 1904, he joined the Berlin Sports Club the following year. Horwitz also soon began studying medicine at the Friedrich Wilhelm University. During World War I he served as a field doctor and was awarded the Iron Cross. After the war he finished his studies. In 1919 he received his license to practice medicine, and in 1920 he received his doctorate. Having been active in the club for many years, he took up his position as the club's sports physician in 1923. As team doctor, he was part of the most successful period in Hertha BSC's history, crowned by the two German championships in 1931 and '32. After the National Socialists came to power, Horwitz was affected by the many discriminations against Jews. He lost his license to practice medicine and from then on was only allowed to work as a "sick person for Jews". In 1938, he was expelled from Hertha BSC along with all other Jewish members of the club. In April 1943, Horwitz was deported to Auschwitz, where his trail is lost. His exact date of death has not been handed down.
