Germany
Founded by Wolf Löwenstein in Jebenhausen in 1866, the business was moved to Göppingen in 1867 and continued by his son Heinrich Löwenstein under his name. In 1899, Heinrich Löwenstein's son Julius Löwenstein joined as a partner. After the death of Heinrich Löwenstein in 1916, Julius Löwenstein continued the business as sole proprietor. In 1933, Julius Löwenstein and his wife Ida, née Gunz moved to Sontheim near Heilbronn to the "Jewish Home for the Elderly" there. In 1934, Julius Löwenstein sold his house to his brother-in-law Emil Hilb. From 1938 on, living conditions in the Jewish Home for the Aged deteriorated more and more until they were evicted in November 1940. Julius and Ida Löwenstein were able to stay in Sontheim and found shelter in the house of Dr. Max Picard. Julius Löwenstein died on November 2, 1941 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Sontheim. Ida Löwenstein was deported to Theresienstadt on August 20, 1942. On September 29, she was transported to the extermination camp Treblinka. The exact date of her death is not known. The fate of Julius and Ida Löwenstein is commemorated by 2 Stolpersteine at Poststraße 18 in Göppingen.
