Klaus Ulrich Freund was born in Breslau on April 16, 1927, the son of Dr. Hans Freund, a district court judge, and his wife Margot, née Schäffer. He had a younger brother Heinz Joachim, who was also born in Breslau on March 11, 1930. From 1937 Klaus Ulrich Freund lived with his parents and brother at Heilbronner Straße 21. Klaus Ulrich Freund worked in the Otto Weidt workshop for the blind.
