<p>Baschewa Zemach (Cemach) was born in Minsk on April 27, 1895, the daughter of the merchant Yossel Cemach and his wife Raisa n&eacute;e Holodetz. She married Abraham Paul Hirschfeld, a textile manufacteur, in Berlin in 1920 and lived with him in Stettin. At that time Baschewa Hirschfeld spoke only Russian.</p>
