The apartment building belonged to the lawyer, judge and notary Max Carl Hauptmann. After losing his left leg as a front-line fighter in World War I, Hauptmann studied law in Jena and Heidelberg. From 1920 he held various positions in Gera. He himself lived at Tivolistr. 8, later at Amthorstr. 1a, and rented out the apartments in his house. From the mid-1930s, he increasingly rented out to destitute and needy Jews and, after his successive occupational ban (delayed by the "Frontkämpferprivileg"), earned his meager living from the rents. Hauptmann fled to Argentina in 1937. In 1938 his house was converted into a "Judenhaus", where in 1939 his parents Rosalie and Gustav also lived in the meantime.
