During the preliminary work on the remodeling of the cross sand, in addition to several cellars of the 16th century, an older vaulted cellar was discovered. It has a basement of large stone ashlars. Two stories and the extraordinary quality show that it is the ritual bath of the Jewish community, the so-called mikvah, which has been documented since 1250 The archaeological excavations of the Thuringian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeology are to clarify the functioning and history of the bath. After completion and evaluation of the archaeological excavations, the state capital Erfurt intends to include the mikvah in the open space design."
