Cyriakstraße 2/3
99094 Erfurt
Germany
A Jewish community re-emerged in the city at the beginning of the 19th century, which was able to establish a cemetery in front of the Brühler Tor at the beginning of today's Cyriakstraße in 1811/12. The cemetery was occupied until the construction of the new cemetery in 1878. In 1926 the cemetery was severely desecrated. In the process, three youths of the "Wiking-Bund" toppled or severely damaged 95 of the 130 existing gravestones at that time (see reports below). In 1938 the cemetery was again vandalized.
In 1952, the cemetery site, located at the southern foot of what is now ega Park, was leveled. Reburials and a rescue of the majority of the gravestones was not possible. In the 1960s garages were placed on the cemetery grounds. Since the 1990s there have been efforts to restore the cemetery grounds in a dignified way. A memorial stone was erected in 1996 on Cyriakstraße - in front of the undeveloped lot No. 3 (inscription: "The old cemetery of the Jewish community of Erfurt existed on this site until 1952. Many important Erfurt Jews rest here. We remember. Free State of Thuringia - Jewish Community of Thuringia - State Capital Erfurt.")
In 2009, a partial reconstruction of the cemetery was made.
