Burggasse 4
98693 Ilmenau
Germany
Already in the 15th century there was possibly a synagogue, which is said to have been destroyed by Schwarzburg soldiers in 1492. But this indication has been doubted several times.
Whether there was a prayer room in the 16th century is not known.
First at the end of the 19th century there was again a Jewish prayer room (synagogue) in Ilmenau. In 1894 the Jewish families set up such a room in the rear building of the residential building Burggasse 4; the inauguration of the prayer room was on September 30, 1894. In this prayer room there were seats for about 40 to 50 people. The prayer room consisted of two older rooms, between which the partition wall had been removed. There were two Torah scrolls in the Torah shrine. For more than 44 years, Burgstrasse 4 was the center of Jewish community life in the city.
During the November pogrom of 1938 the prayer hall was desecrated and looted. The interior furnishings and ritual items - Torah scrolls, prayer shawls, etc. - were publicly burned in the marketplace. The prayer hall was used as a living space a little later.
The building of the former prayer hall was also used as a residential building after 1945 and was demolished around 1987/88 because of dilapidation.
