For only 55 years the synagogue in Meiningen was the center of Jewish community life in the town. During the November pogrom in 1938, the synagogue was destroyed. In the early morning of November 10, SS and SA troops ravaged the building, and later the remaining interior furnishings were smashed by many rioting youths. Throughout the day, pipes, organ pipes and benches floated in the adjacent bleach ditch. In 1939, the synagogue building was demolished.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the destruction of the synagogue, a memorial stone was inaugurated at its site on November 8, 1988.
