The solemn inauguration of the synagogue was celebrated from 14-16.09.1883 together with the Christian churches and the rest of the city community. The Gladbacher newspaper reported über the course of the celebration:
„Mr. Beordnete Croon brought the Israelite community his high: The celebration of the completion of the beautiful temple was indeed primarily a celebration of the Israelite co-religionists; but also for the city, as whose representative he appeared here, this day was of great importance. Apart from the fact that the beautiful dome is an ornament of the city, it marks the end of a period of development of the Israelite community. Thanks to the efforts and sacrifices of all those involved, their wish, which they have cherished for so long, has now come true, and they now have their own place of worship, just like the other parishes in the city.“
The Gladbach city community therefore not only took part in the celebrations with interest, but there was also a high level of respect and tolerance among themselves.
In the night of 09.11.1938, the synagogue was set on fire by SA-Männer and burned down to the foundation walls.
Againstüber the former location of the synagogue, a memorial stone of the sculptor Ulrich Rückriem was erected in 1974. It bears the inscription: „This stone was erected in memory of the synagogue destroyed on November 9, 1938 and persecution of fellow Jews in the years 1933-1945.“
