The Jewish community of Oberwesel, the former imperial city of Wesel (1237 to 1309), was first mentioned in the imperial tax directory of 1241. [1] As in most regions of the empire, the Jews of Oberwesel experienced a constant succession of toleration and expulsion in the centuries that followed. The latter was mostly accompanied by the loss of their possessions, often even their lives. Even a period of peaceful coexistence that began in the 19th century ended soon after the First World War, because the anti-Semitism that was still latent even in Oberwesel once again gained the upper hand and culminated in the complete annihilation of Jewish life in the town during the National Socialist era.[2]
