The Penang Jewish Cemetery was established in 1805 and is considered the oldest Jewish cemetery in Southeast Asia. There are around 107 tombs here, the oldest tombstone dating back to 1835 and the youngest tombstone to 2011. Most of the tombs are in the shape of a triangular coffin with a domed lid. The cemetery is well maintained and well preserved.
Some gravestones bear names that indicate a German origin, e.g. Regina Valeria Eisenberg, Rosa Grütz or Wolf Horn (see also German Jews in Penang in More than Merchants, p. 33).
