The synagogue at 9 Smilgos Street in Kėdainiai, today known as the „Synagogue on Smilgos Street” (lit. Smilgos g. sinagoga), was built in the mid-19th century thanks to a donation from the wealthy shoemaker Elijas Wilner (also known as Ilija Vilneris). It is a brick building in the classicist style on a rectangular floor plan. The synagogue had an exclusive character and was intended for wealthy craftsmen. It consisted of a one-storey section, which took up two-thirds of the building, where the men prayed, and a two-storey section, where the women's room was located. Before 1940, the synagogue was surrounded by an iron fence with an entrance from the courtyard.

On September 14, 1999, a memorial plaque with inscriptions in Hebrew and Lithuanian was placed on the outer wall of the synagogue, stating that the Gaon of Vilnius taught here at the beginning of the 18th century. However, this information is incorrect, as there was no synagogue here at the time. The placement of the plaque here was due to the catastrophic technical condition of the synagogues on the Old Market Square at the time.
