Chabad is a worldwide Jewish Hasidic movement that originated in the 18th century in Lyubavichi, Smolensk Oblast, in present-day Russia, and is characterized by its emphasis on philosophy and mystical teachings. The movement is based in Brooklyn, New York, but its activities reach worldwide, including Israel. Chabad is known for its efforts to promote Jewish life worldwide, particularly through education, charity and religious outreach.
With respect to the Israeli settlers, Chabad plays a politically and ideologically supportive role that holds the land of the Bible sacred and supports Jewish sovereignty over all land, including the disputed territories. Chabad supports the settlers both ideologically and practically by building Chabad houses and advocates the establishment and development of Jewish settlements in areas such as Judea and Samaria.
While Chabad is praised by many for this support, there is also criticism, especially from those who see Israel's settlement policy as an obstacle to peace in the Middle East. Nevertheless, Chabad remains an important religious and cultural force in Israel, both within the settler community and beyond.
