Dr. Alfred Haas was born on December 19, 1878 in St. Ingbert. His parents were Julius Haas and Clara, née Weisenbeck. From 1897 he studied at the University of Munich and became a doctor of medicine in 1902. Until 1904, he worked as a surgical assistant in Saarbrücken and Paderborn. He then worked as an assistant in the surgery and orthopaedics departments of the municipal hospital in Cologne. From 1907 he maintained a private surgical practice in Munich. In 1909 he married Elsa Schülein, a daughter of the brewery owner Joseph Schülein and Ida Schülein, née Baer from Oberdorf am Ipf. Elsa Schülein's dowry in the marriage included the property at 19 Richard-Wagner-Strasse in Munich's Maxvorstadt district. In 1910/1911, Dr. Alfred Haas built a private surgical and orthopaedic clinic there. The architect Max Neumann created a four-storey Art Nouveau building. The operating room was located on the top floor and was supplied with daylight through skylights. The clinic offered space for 45 patients. In 1928, the clinic was extended by 15 beds and an operating department was set up in the basement when the neighboring building at Richard Waqgner Str. 15 was acquired. Dr. Alfred Haas ran the clinic from 1912 to 1938. In addition to the practice, surgeons were also trained at the clinic. During the First World War, Dr. Alfred Haas set up a reserve hospital in his clinic where wounded soldiers were treated. After his license to practice medicine was revoked in October 1938, Haas emigrated with his family, first to Great Britain and then to the United States.
