Martin Breslauer was born on December 16, 1871 in Berlin.his parents were Alexander Breslauer(1842 - 1913) and Johanna Breslauer, née Pappenheim(1845 - 1897), who was born in Berlin.Martin Breslauer had three siblings - Helene, married name Loewenstein,Heinrich Breslauer and Paul Breslauer.Martin Breslauer's mother had a sister - Elise Pappenheim(1849 - 1919),who was married to Hermann Breslauer(brother of Alexander Breslauer).Martin Breslauer was married to Margarete Freistadt,born on December 17, 1889 in Berlin. The couple had two children - Eva, born on May 5, 1908, and Bernhard Hartmut, born on July 1, 1918. Martin Breslauer studied palaeography at the University of Rostock and then worked as a trainee for booksellers in Paris, London, Rome and Florence and in Germany for Joseph Baer & Co. in Frankfurt am Main and Ludwig Rosenthal in Munich, before founding the Breslauer & Meyer“ bookshop and antiquarian bookshop with Edmund Meyer in 1898. In 1904, the business paths of the school friends parted, and Martin Breslauer - book stock up to 1760 - Edmund Meyer the stock from 1760 onwards.Martin Breslauer moved his business to Leipziger Straäe and later to Französische Straße in Berlin.He was very successful with his antiquarian bookshop, which was known far beyond Germany, and Martin Breslauer was also an expert for the Prussian State Library, a founding member of the Society of Bibliophiles, a co-founder of the Maximilian Society and a member and treasurer of the Society for German Literature.The National Socialists' seizure of power in 1933 naturally also had an impact on his business, and Martin Breslauer had to give up his home in Lichterfelde as early as 1934 and move with his family to an apartment in Meinekestraße.On July 1, 1937, he emigrated with his family to Great Britain after having to sell two thirds of his property.
