The roots of the Joseph Baer & Co. antiquarian bookshop go back to 1785, when Abraham Joseph Baer, son of the book dealer Abraham Baer from Hanau, opened an antiquarian bookshop in the Niederlage in Frankfurt's Dominican monastery. 1792 he was already able to move his business to the better located Steingasse in Frankfurt's old town thanks to connections. The business was handed over to his sons Bernhard Joseph (1799–1864),Leopold Joseph (1805–1861) and Hermann Joseph (1811–1881) in 1824.After Bernhard Joseph became a citizen of Frankfurt in 1834, the company was registered on April 23, 1834. On April 23, 1834, the company „Joseph Baer – Handlung und Spedition, verbunden mit antiquarischem Bücherlager“, 1836 then „Joseph Baer, Antiquariat, Buch- und Kunsthandlung“.With Leopold Joseph as managing director (1841), Bernhard Joseph and Hermann Joseph as authorized signatories, the company became one of the leading antiquarian booksellers in Germany and Europe.1850 After Leopold Joseph's death in 1861, Hermann and Leopold's widow continued to run the business, and in 1873 the management was handed over to Leopold's son Simon Leopold (1845–1919) and Hermann's son Saly Baer (1855–1882).Hermann, who went to France in 1869, founded a branch in Paris in 1871, which was taken over after his death in 1881 by his second son Joseph (* 1853), who died in 1884, and the Paris business was then sold to F. Fetscherin.Since October 26, 1872, the Frankfurt company has been known as "Joseph Baer & Co." With a stock of around 500,000 items, the antiquarian bookshop moved to Hochstrasse 6 in 1899. Moriz Sondheim (1860–1944) became a partner in the antiquarian bookshop.
Together with the sons of Simon Leopold Baer - Leo (1880–1948) and Edwin Baer, the antiquarian bookshop was continued.
Simon Leopold retired as co-owner in 1916.
In 1933, the company was forced to give up the business.
Leo and Edwin Baer went into exile in 1934.
