Kaufmann Louis Gottschalk.1930 address book contains the following entry: Berend & Gottschalk, Bank, Edelmetalle, Rathenauplatz 7, T. 36241, Tel-Adr: Berengo, ( BK Reichsbankgiro, Postscheckkto Hannover 368 ), owned by Karl Gottschalk and Arthur Buschhoff. - Louis Gottschalk was born on January 31, 1839 in Burgdorf. He was married to Henriette Rothschild, born on October 5, 1849 in Köln. The couple had five children - Rosalie, born around 1876, - Karl Marcus Gottschalk, born on April 13, 1876, - Anna Meta, married name Catzenstein, born on April 13, 1876, - Fritz Joseph, born on February 6, 1880 and Ernst Enoch, born on December 22, 1888. Louis Gottschalk had co-founded the bank Berend & Gottschalk on Theaterplatz in 1872. Louis Gottschalk died on August 17, 1914. From 1915-17, Siegfried Mendelsohn and Fritz Gottschalk are listed in the address book as bank owners. In 1920 Karl Gottschalk took over the management of the bank. Karl Gottschalk was married to Elisabeth Levy née Steinfeld from Rinteln. Elisabeth was a widow. Her husband had died in World War I. Karl and Elisabeth Gottschalk had two children together - Rudolph, born in 1920, and Ilse, born in 1923. Elisabeth brought another son into the marriage - Fritz. He died in 1935 at the age of 19 in an avalanche accident.Karl and Rudolph Gottschalk were arrested during the Reichspogromnacht and detained in the Hanover police prison.After their release, the couple managed to take Rudolph and Ilse on a Kindertransport to Enland at the beginning of 1939.1939 saw the liquidation of Berend & Gottschalk Bank and the sale of his house. A planned emigration to England was delayed. Karl and Elisabeth Gottschalk were deported to Riga on December 15, 1941. Karl Gottschalk died there in 1943 and Elisabeth Gottschalk died in Stutthof concentration camp in 1944.
