Max Schlesinger department store

The native Berliner Max Schlesinger, born on August 31, 1884, came to Schönebeck at the age of 21 and had the department store am Markt built, which he managed at the same time as the department store "Wohlwert" in Salzer Straße. He was married to Lucie, née Gongala. They had two children, Kurt and Eva.

In 1933, the SA forced the department store to close. Max and Lucie moved to Berlin in 1934 to prepare for their emigration

The memorial book of the Federal Archives shows that Lucie Schlesinger was deported to Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp in December 1942 and murdered. Max Schlesinger managed to escape with his two children via Palestine to South Africa.
