Kapellenstraße 65

Germany
Back in 1877, hop merchant Marx Löwenthal owned a sizeable property here in Kapellenstraße, consisting of two residential buildings and a hop warehouse. The company flourished and was able to expand its buildings again and again. In 1907, a hop warehouse with a 25-metre-high steam chimney was added.
At this time, Ludwig Löwental, a grandson of Marx, was already running the company. In addition to the hop trade, Ludwig Löwenthal, known as Louis, was actively involved in the town. Louis Löwenthal died in 1918, but a nephew continued to run the company until the Nazi era. The group of buildings of the hop merchant's was sold on several times after 1945 and finally demolished in 1988. Parts of the fence can still be seen today. And one of the doors to the Löwenthals' residential buildings now serves as the entrance to the restaurant „Zum Rothen Ochsen“.
