Walter Steinhart was born on September 5, 1880 in Weiden in der Oberpfalz, his wife Rosa, née Steinhart, on June 17, 1885 in Tachau/Eger in western Böhmen, now Tachov in the Czech Republic. Rosa Steinhart was the sister of Ida Fränkel, née Steinhart.
Walter Steinhart was a businessman and worked as a sales representative and accountant. Together with Emil Kahlenberg, he was the owner of the Walter Steinhart company, a specialty store for household and kitchen appliances at 23 Trachenberger Stra e g. He and his wife Rosa were congratulated on their silver wedding anniversary on April 4, 1938 in the community newspaper of the Jewish religious community. Rosa Steinhart tried to earn a living by renting out rooms. On January 20, 1937, Kathi Steinhart was congratulated on her 94th birthday at 23 Trachenberger Strasse. It can be assumed that this was the mother or mother-in-law of Rosa Steinhart, who died in 1937.
In 1940 Walter Steinhart had a stroke with symptoms of paralysis. Rosa was also in poor health and was therefore given additional food such as butter, which was otherwise forbidden for Jews, by decree.
The couple Walter and Rosa Steinhart had to move into the „Judenhaus" Bautzner Straße 20. From there they were deported on November 23/24, 1942 to the Hellerberg Jewish camp in Dr. Todt Strasse (today Radeburger Strasse) in Dresden. On March 2-3, 1943, they were deported from Dresden-Neustadt station to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Walter and Rosa Steinhart were murdered there on March 3, 1943. In 2017, a street in Pieschen was named in Rosa Steinhart's honor.
