The Steinhart department store was located on the corner of Kesselsdorfer Straße and Poststraße in the Löbtau district of Dresden.
About 1906, Richard Steinhart (*26.5.1873) opened a shop for fashion accessories, which later developed into a department store. It offered everything for the modern household. The catchy advertising slogan: "As hard as stone" tells you: "Your department store must be as hard as stone." The sons Kurt and Werner took over the flourishing business from their father.
After 1933, more and more restrictions made it impossible to run the business: at first, only Jewish people were allowed to shop in the department store. As a result, the number of customers was greatly reduced and staff were not allowed to be dismissed. After Jewish-owned bank accounts were blocked, the brothers Kurt and Werner Steinhart were forced to sell the department store and the property to Schumann & Co. for less than its value in 1938.
Richard and Bertha Steinhart were deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp in August 1942. Richard Steinhart was murdered on July 15, 1943, his wife on May 18, 1944 and their son Kurt Steinhart was murdered in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on June 23, 1942. Werner and Marga were able to flee to the USA.
