The address book of the city of Vienna from 1878 contains the following entry under " Logged companies" : Schnabl Jakob & Co, chem. Producten- u. Cigarettenpapier-Erzeugnisse, Oeff. Ges. Jakob Schnabl and Ignaz Bleier, Auwinkel 5, both sign. - The chemical product and cigarette paper manufacturer Jacob Schnabl & Co. was founded in 1859. The founders were Jakob Schnabel, born on December 1, 1832 in Hoch-Oujezd, Böhmen (Vysoký Újezd, Czech Republic), married from 1865 to Emilie, née Bloch, and the chemist Ignaz Bleier, born in Kosolup near Pilsen (Böhmen) on July 15, 1935, married to Pauline Paula, née Stein. - The original production and sale of ink, shoe polish and nightlights was soon followed by the production of cigarette paper, in the form of rolls and tubes. Around 1890, the company employed around 500 workers. By 1900, the number of employees had risen to 700. In 1880, a paper coating plant was founded to improve the quality of the cigarette paper wrappers and to optimize the printing quality. At the turn of the century, the sons of the company founders - Leo Schnabel and Dr. Otto Bleier - joined the company. When Kommerzialrat Jakob Schnabl retired to private life in 1908, his eldest son Josef joined the company in his place. Jakob Schnabl died on December 22, 1909 in Vienna. Ignatz Bleier died on Dec. 24, 1917 in Vienna. After the First World War, the product range was expanded to include napkins and toilet paper. The company name “Samum Vereinigte Papierindustrie KG” was only introduced when the Creditanstalt took over the factory after Hitler came to power in Österreich
