Erich Max Isakowitz was born in Königsberg in 1891. He studied in Königsberg and Munich and then worked as a doctor and dentist. His studies were interrupted by his participation in the First World War. Sofie Isakowitz, née Berlowitz, was born in 1893 in Tschernyschewskoje (German: Eydtkuhnen) and was the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Hannelore Isakowitz, known as Lore, was born in 1915 in Sowetsk (German: Tilsit), a small town in what was then East Prussia and is now Russia. In 1924, the family moved to Dresden, where relatives were already living and where they hoped for better career opportunities for Erich Isakowitz and to escape the growing anti-Semitism in East Prussia. The family quickly joined the creative circles of the Jewish community in Dresden. Their circle of friends included many artists; they had been friends with Victor Klemperer since the 1930s, who mentioned them in his diaries.
In 1935, Sofie Isakowitz traveled to London. The fact that she knew England from her travels and spoke good English helped the family to leave Germany. The family fled to England in 1936 and settled in northwest London, where Erich Isakowitz was able to practise as a dentist. Sofie Isakowitz died in 1951, Erich Isakowitz in 1979. In August 1985, Lore and her husband Harry Petzal visited Dresden again for the first time, which was a great shock to her. Lore Petzal died in London the following year.
The laying of the Stolpersteine was initiated by Lore's daughter, the artist Monica Petzal. She processed her family history artistically in „The Dresden Project“, which she exhibited in Dresden in 2015.
