The department store " Warenhaus zum Strauß " takes its name from the former inn with guest rooms "Zum Strauss", in whose place Nürnberg's first large new hotel building was erected in 1875, the luxury hostel with 150 rooms under the name "Zum Strauss". After a change of ownership in 1899, the hotel was renovated and partially rebuilt. Various shops and the Nürnberger Bank were housed on the ground floor. The hotel was also brought up to the latest technical standards - rooms with electric light and an elevator to the floors. A winter garden with a fountain, a ballroom for 1,500 people and an American bar now invited guests to linger and stay. In 1905, the noble hotel was converted into the city's most impressive department store. With a wide variety of goods at reasonable prices, the Grand Bazar zum Strauß" now invited the people of Nürnberg to enjoy a new shopping experience. In 1927, the Frankfurt merchant and department store entrepreneur Hermann Wronker bought the "Zum Strauß" in addition to the department store "Hansa" (Frankfurter Zeil). In 1939, Hermann and Ida Wronker fled to Paris. The planned emigration to their son and daughter in Egypt failed. After an odyssey (hiding places, imprisonment in camps) in France, Ida and Hermann Wronker were deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp via the Drancy collection camp on September 23, 1942. The couple was declared dead. - The name "Grand Bazar" was still common in Nuremberg until after the Second World War.
