Jewish Teaching Center Stuttgart

From its foundation in 1926 until its forced closure in 1938, the Jüdisches Lehrhaus Stuttgart existed for 12 years. The aim of the Lehrhaus was to counteract the loss of Jewish identity with a new form of adult education. By reflecting on the Jewish religion and culture, a new community was to be created. The Jüdische Lehrhaus has remained known above all as an educational institution which, under the leadership of the religious philosopher Martin Buber, sought to establish a dialog between Jews and Christians. When the National Socialists seized power, the formation of Jewish identity and community in the Lehrhaus became an act of resistance.
