Founded in 1909, the Bloch & Guggenheimer architecture firm has left its mark on the city of Stuttgart. Oscar Bloch (1881-1937) and Ernst Guggenheimer (1880-1973), who both came from Jewish families, built, unbuilt, extended and designed countless buildings and residential buildings in Stuttgart, Ulm and the wider region. These include Villa Oppenheimer, Haus Frankenstein as well as schools, detached houses and apartment buildings in various styles, from country house to Bauhaus. Both architects were severely restricted professionally by the anti-Semitic persecution during the National Socialist era. In 1945, Guggenheimer re-established the office and built, among other things, the new synagogue in 1951/1952.
