Herbert Moritz Caro was born on October 16, 1906 in Berlin.he worked as a lawyer at the Berlin State Court and was a court assessor (probationary judge).Herbert Moritz Caro was admitted to the bar in January 1933.the so-called " Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service “ enacted on April 7, 1933. However, the so-called " Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums “, § 3- Arierparagraph enacted on April 7, 1933 meant that all civil servants of non-Aryan descent were dismissed from the civil service and thus Herbert Moritz Caro lost his license to practice law, which he had only recently received. On May 5, 1933, the Prussian Ministry of Justice issued the „ban on representation“, which explicitly prohibited Herbert Moritz Caro from holding any legal office. Even his seven years of membership and activity as a table tennis player, sports director and team captain did not prevent him from being excluded from the German national team, which prompted Herbert Moritz Caro to emigrate to France in the same year. In 1934 he returned to Berlin, where he married Nina Zabludowski, and in 1935 the couple emigrated to Brazil, where Herbert Moritz Caro earned his living in the first few years of his arrival by working in an export company and teaching language courses. Linguistically talented and with a passion for literature, he started working at Livraria do Globo in Porto Alegre in 1939, where his wife Nina Zabludowski, a German studies graduate, had already worked before him, and where he remained as a translator and editor until the company closed in 1948.Herbert Moritz Caro was probably the best-known translator of German literature in Brazil.Translations into Portuguese of Thomas Mann, Emil Ludwig, Oskar von Wertheimer, Hermann Hesse and Elias Canetti, lectures on German-language authors at the German-Brazilian Cultural Institute in Porto Alegre, and the writing of essays on art and literature for Brazilian newspapers and magazines still bear witness to his vocation today.
