Eva Kauffmann, née von der Wall (born April 13, 1908 in Celle) was the daughter of Else and Julius von der Wall. Von der Wall ran a successful law firm at Mühlenstraße 25 and was the only Jewish lawyer admitted to the Celle Higher Regional Court.
Eva completed her A-levels in Celle and then studied German, English and French. She received her doctorate from the University of Hamburg in December 1932 with a dissertation on the French novelist Alain-Fourier. In the same month, she married the trainee lawyer Walter Kauffmann (born May 20, 1909 in Hanover). The couple moved into an apartment at Schackstra<e 3. Although Walter graduated in April 1933, he was not admitted to the major state examination in law because he was Jewish. In August 1933, the Kauffmanns emigrated to Amsterdam via Paris and London, where Eva's parents followed in 1938. Eva and Walter had a daughter in Amsterdam.
What exactly happened to the Kauffmanns and von der Walls after the occupation of the Netherlands by German troops in 1940 is not known.
Eva Kauffmann and her parents died in Auschwitz, Walter Kauffmann in Bergen-Belsen. Their young daughter survived in hiding in the Netherlands.
